India’s defense aviation program is preparing for a key milestone with the upcoming rollout of the Tejas MkII fighter jet. As per updates, the prototype will debut between October and November 2025, followed by its first flight in early 2026.
What Makes Tejas MkII Special?
An evolution of the Tejas MkI, the MkII version boasts significant improvements. It features:
More Power: Fitted with the GE F414 engine, it delivers greater thrust and speed.
Upgraded Radar & Systems: Includes the indigenous ‘Uttam’ AESA radar and advanced electronic warfare systems.
Better Design: A larger frame, canards, and increased payload capacity of up to 6,500 kg give it a combat edge.
Why It Matters
The Tejas MkII is expected to replace aging aircraft like the Mirage-2000 and MiG-29 in the Indian Air Force. Full-scale production is targeted by 2028–2029, with about 18 jets to be built each year. Over 120 units are planned for induction by 2035.
Beyond military strength, the jet also represents India’s broader ‘Make in India’ vision—boosting indigenous defense manufacturing and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers.
As the countdown to the Tejas MkII rollout begins, it marks not just a technological leap, but a strong statement of India’s growing capabilities in modern combat aviation.
